A selection of weaving drafts

Twill Weaving Draft

One of the basic weaving drafts is the twill draft. In a twill weave, one or two consecutive warp threads are raised and two are lowered. On the following pick the next 2 warp threads are raised and two are lowered, creating a diagonal slant to the fabric.

Weaving Draft: Birdseye

Bird’s Eye drafts are one of my favourite types of drafts. There are several variations of threading and treadling that you can choose from. Bird’s Eye can be woven with very fine cotton and linen yarns for placemats or tablecloths or thicker wool for cozy blankets.

Weaving Draft – Summer Winter: aa032701

Summer and Winter is a very versatile draft. This project uses 8/2 cotton yarn for making reversible placemats.

Treadling

I wove these placemats as a sampler, varying the treadling between Singles and Pairs.

Finishing

Each placemat was woven to a length of 18″ on the loom. Handfinishing was done on the loom using Hemstitch finish. Between each placemat, the warp was advanced 2 inches, to allow a fringe.

After weaving, I cut the warp from the loom, and put it through a wash and dry
cycle in my washer. After washing, I ironed the placemats and trimmed the fringes.

Variation: Chenille Towels

handwoven chenille towels

Instead of using 8/2 cotton for the weft, you can also try using cotton chenille. In this sample I wove 1450 ypp cotton chenille for the pattern shots of the draft alternating with 8/2 cotton for the tabby shots. I think that this combination would be nice for bath towels.

Weaving Drafts – Huck draft: blma-babyhuck

I’ve used this weaving draft for baby blankets and it makes nice, thermal-type blankets. It didn’t work well with Peaches & Cream yarn I think because my sett was too wide at 6 epi. I often use two colors or one color plus white, alternating them in the blocks because that creates nice effects in the basket weave blocks. The huck is a 3-thread huck.

Doubleweave pickup: bltan-pickup

Double Weave Pickup

Well Folks, I tried a new technique today, it’s from the Jan/Feb 1999 issue of Handwoven. You can see the page I did at my pickup page which describes my technique more.

doubleweave pickup

This is the partially finished project.

doubleweave pickup

I lifted up shafts 2 & 4 and picked up with the knitting needle all the stitches that were the pattern,
then I pushed the needle to the beater.

doubleweave pickup

I let go of 2 & 4 and lifted shaft 1.

doubleweave pickup

Leaving shaft 1 up,
I threw the background weft (the yellow) from the right, then beat.

doubleweave pickup

I then lifted shafts 1&3 and picked up with the knitting needle all the background parts of the pattern.

doubleweave pickup

I then lifted shaft 2 and then threw the pattern weft from the right.
I repeated this process again, throwing from the left, and lifting shafts 3, then 4.
I kept this up until I was done and the middle square was actually a pocketed double weave…. So I stuffed it with poly-fill, and then threw the next background and pattern weft and followed the process for awhile:

This is time consuming but it’s really neat!

Handweaving – Name Drafting – 8 Shaft Looms: aa010200

Words or names can be incorporated into weaving to create original designs. Using name drafting, secret messages can be sent in a piece of woven cloth. By substituting each letter of the alphabet or numeric value for a particular thread or shaft, words can be hidden in the pattern of the fabric. On a 4 shaft loom, the letters of the alphabet can be arranged to correspond with the 4 shafts:

Name Draft – 4 Shaft Loom
SHAFT 1 A E I M Q U Y
SHAFT 2 B F J N R V Z
SHAFT 3 C G K O S W .
SHAFT 4 D H L P T X

There are many different ways to design a name draft. Try it out, using your own name.
Experiment with different colours, codes and threadings to create your own signature piece. The following table shows one way of coding using an 8 Shaft loom. Sometimes you will need
to experiment with different coding systems to create a pleasing woven effect.

Name Draft – 8 Shaft Loom
Shaft 1 A I Q Y 7
Shaft 2 B J R Z 8
Shaft 3 C K S 1 9
Shaft 4 D L T 2 0
Shaft 5 E M U 3 .
Shaft 6 F N V 4
Shaft 7 G O W 5
Shaft 8 H P X 6

Using the above coding system, on an 8 shaft loom, ALLFIBERARTS.com would be drafted as
follows:

A 1
L 4
L 4
F 6
I 1
B 2
E 5
R 2
A 1
R 2
T 4
S 3
. 5
C 3
O 7
M 5

And woven, this name draft would look like this
