Weaving – Transparency Ornament: aa122498

As part of our recent ornament exchange, I made these ornaments using hemp as warp and background weft. My original star design uses 4/4 Foxfiber Green cotton.

This was my first attempt at doing a transparency weaving. I used the end of a hemp warp that I had used for towels. I resleyed the warp at 10 epi, leaving a 1 inch space between each ornament. As I was doing several ornaments at one time across the width of the loom, I was unable to use the beater to beat each row in place. Instead, I used a tapestry beater to place the weft.I would recommend doing each ornament individually on a narrow warp, (i.e. 32 ends) as using the reed and beater would give a more consistent and even beat.

Warp: 3 ply Hemp

Background weft: 3 ply hemp

Design Weft: 4/4 Foxfiber Cotton – Green

Sett: 10 epi

No. Ends: 32
Threading – 1,2,3,4 twill

Treadling:

Tabby: 1,3 Hemp

Design: 2,3 Cotton, using small butterflies for each separate section of the design

Tabby: 2,4 Hemp

Design: 3,4 Cotton
Finishing: Hem stitch each end with the same hemp yarn as the weft.

Knitting with Handspun : aa110497

Whether you are a handspinner using your own yarn or an experienced knitter, once you have tried knitting with handspun you may get spoiled. Personally, I find it much more satisfying to knit with handspun than the “perfect” commercial yarns.

Even for the novice knitter, using handspun isn’t difficult. The occasional irregularities of the yarn can hide the less than perfect tension that sometimes occurs.

I find it best to use a 2-ply handspun yarn for knitting. Whenever a yarn is spun as a singles, it has a tendency to try to unspin itself. If knit up as a singles, the yarn will still try to untwist and the garment may stretch or sag. If the yarn has been plyed with another singles (2 ply), the yarns will be untwisting on each other, creating a balanced yarn that should have less of a tendency to stretch out of shape.

Although handspun yarn has some bumps and irregularities, if well spun, it should be of a consistent weight throughout the skein. Knitting with this is similar to knitting with a commercially spun textured yarn.

When choosing a pattern for knitting handspun, it is really important to spin and knit a large test swatch to get an accurate gauge. The needle size or number of stitches may have to be adjusted in the pattern.

For non-spinners who would like to order handspun, but the yarn is too thick or too fine for your project, ask the spinner if another weight is available. Perhaps they can spin a sample for you in 2 or 3 slightly different weights.

Angora Scarf: aa091897

My angora rabbits have produced some lovely fur that I have spun into singles yarn. I used a core spinning technique for this yarn. For the core, I used a fine silk singles that I attached to the leader.

core spun angora yarn

Holding a small amount of the angora fiber, I spun the silk singles through the angora in my hand. As the silk spun onto the bobbin, the angora spun around the silk yarn creating a lightweight but strong yarn. For this project I plan to use this yarn in the weft and make some scarves.

To keep angora from flying around and getting all over my clothes as I’m working with it, I place a small linen towel on my lap. If I need to get up in the middle of the project, the angora fiber can be wrapped up in the towel easily.

I am using a standard twill pattern for this project as the angora yarn will provide sufficient texture and interest. The scarves can be woven in the twill treadling as shown in the draft or in tabby ( 1-3, 2-4)

twill draft

Weft:

Handspun singles angora yarn

If angora is not available, try using mohair or another soft fine yarn such as merino wool or alpaca.

Weave in twill for a length of 60 inches and leave a space of 12 inches for fringe (6 inches per scarft), before starting the next one.

Finishing:

Cut between each scarf length and twist or braid the ends prior to washing. Wash the scarves in hot, soapy water. Rinse in cool water. The angora fiber will full and fluff out with this treatment.

I generally do not dye angora prior to spinning as I find that the angora matts quite easily and then is much more difficult to handle. As these scarves are small, they will be fairly easy to dye even as a finished project. After washing, I place the scarf in the hot dye solution and let it simmer for about 20 minutes. This method of dyeing will not give an even colour because the fiber absorbs the dye at different rates at different temperatures. The dye solution in the bottom of the pot is hotter than that at the top of the pot. My rabbits are also multi-coloured so when dyeing the wool, a lovely variegated colour will result.

Weaving Project – Linen Table Runners: aa082797

I like to use linen in my weaving. I like its crispness and precision. It can be a challenging fiber to work with. It is not forgiving as wool is. All your mistakes show up. However, a well woven project is something to be proud of.

For this project, I used a 2 ply bleached tow linen. I found it a bit tricky to work with as the loose bits of tow were sticky while I was winding the warp onto the loom. Once wound on, it behaved quite well. I kept a spray bottle of water handy, giving the warp a few sprays as I advanced the warp.

This project made 8 table runners, each 28 inches long with a 4 inch allowance between each runner for fringe.

linen draft

Warp:

2 ply bleached tow linen (4400 ypp)
Length: 8 yards
Sett:: 24 e.p.i.
Width in Reed: 15 inches
No. Ends: 360

woven linen

Weft:

The weaving draft is a braided twill. The threading produces diagonal lines that weave in and out on each other.

By using the same yarn in the weft, the interlacing effect was very subtle. A darker tow linen gave a more noticeable braided appearance.

Mawata Silk: aa073097

Using the mawata silk that I spun and dyed (described in a previous article), I thought that it would be perfect for making silk wallets. The colours were so stunning in this silk, that I wanted the colour changes to swim throughout the weave structure. I chose an undulating twill pattern, adapting it from Carol Strickler’s book, A Weaver’s Book of 8-Shaft Patterns. p. 52

A Weaver’s Book of 8-Shaft Patterns: From the Friends of Handwoven

This project made enough fabric for 6 silk wallets.

Warp:

For the warp, I chose 8/2 cotton in bright colours of cyan, bright pink and yellow. I sleyed the reed in stripes of these colours.

Width in Reed: 10 inches
Number of Ends: 160
Sett: 16 e.p.i.
Length: 3 yards
Loom waste: 24 inches

Weft:

For the weft, I used the mawata silk, spun as a singles. Its nubby texture gave the finished product an interesting feel. I wove the silk weft for 10 inches and then using 2/8 cotton, wove a band of 4 inches in length.

Finishing:

I cut the pieces in the middle of each cotton band. Folding the piece of fabric in the centre, I matched up the cotton bands. I sewed in a zipper between the two ends of the cotton bands. Then I sewed up the side edges of the silk, forming the silk wallet.
