Spin Flora not Fauna

I am very pleased and delighted to hear that my workshop is full for the upcoming AGWSD Summer School 2017. This summer school will be held at Sparsholt College in Hampshire, August 13 – 20, 2017.
The Summer School is hosted by the Association of Guilds of Weavers, Spinners and Dyers, UK and is a bi-annual week long event where participants spend their days working in intensive workshops on their passion. Here is a diary of the AGWSD Summer School 2015.

Kukka Transparency Hand Spun Flax
Kukka Transparency Hand Spun Flax

My week long workshop will focus on handspinning flora not fauna – so plant fibres instead of animal. I will try to cover a number of different plants, depending on what will be available at the time. Spinning fibres such as flax, hemp, soya, banana, bamboo, seaweed, ramie, corn, rose.

Over the coming weeks as I make samples, I will try to write a few preview articles about spinning and working with these new fibres.

Needle Felt Snowman

Making a needle felted snowman is a good beginner needle felting project. You will learn how to form a ball using needle felting, how to make indents and shapes and how to join 2 needle felted pieces together.

Needle felted Snowman

Form a small ball with the roving.
Begin to needle felt the ball by poking the wool with the needle about 10-20 times.
Be very careful not to poke your fingers – it does hurt.
Rotate the wool ball about a 1/4 turn and continue to poke the wool.
Work your way around the whole ball, smoothing and shaping the wool as go around.

Needle felted Snowman

After you have worked your way around the ball a few times, the wool will start to harden and felt.

Needle felted Snowman

Hold the ball of wool in your hand and feel for any soft spots.
Needle felt these areas a bit more, so that the wool ball feels evenly felted around.

Needle felted Snowman

The wool will continue to harden and felt the more that you needle felt it.
Before it gets to a very hard stage – where it starts to get difficult to needle felt it any more – stop.

And make another slightly smaller ball for the head of the snowman.

Needle felted Snowman

[sc name=”adsense-in-ad”]

When both balls have been needle felted but are still slightly soft and squishy you are going to join the 2 balls together by needle felting them at the neck of the snowman.

Needle felted Snowman

Put the 2 balls together, and needle felt them by poking the needle through both the head and the body.
This will joing the 2 parts together because the wool is being pushed through the head and into the body of the snowman.

Needle felted Snowman

Now it is time to form the face.
Needle felt small indentations for the eyes and mouth.
Take a very small strand of black wool roving for the eyes and form a small ball in your fingers.
Needle felt the eye into the indentation in the wool.
Do the same for the other eye and the mouth.

Needle felted Snowman

Make slightly larger indentations into the body of the snowman for the buttons.
Using black wool, form small balls for the buttons and needle felt these into the body.

Needle felted Snowman

Crochet a small hat with fine wool yarn.
Attach this to the snowman’s head by needle felting it into place.

Needle felted Snowman

Crochet a small scarf and attach this by needle felting it around the snowman’s neck.

Santa suit

In the previous article I provided instructions for knitting a Santa doll.
Knit Santa Doll
Knit Santa doll

Santa needs a Santa suit, so I thought that I would make him one from handmade felt.

I started by felting a fairly thin piece of red felt (approx 15″x15″ Square)

red handmade felt

Felt Making

How to Make Handmade Felt

[sc name=”adsense-in-ad”]

Santa’s Trousers
After felting I cut a piece of this felt that was wide enough to fit around Santa’s tummy, and long enough to fit his legs. Then I cut partly up the center of the piece of felt – to fit around his legs.
Santa Felted Pants
I hand stitched around the cut piece with a length of wool yarn, to strengthen the edges.

Santa's felt trousers

I then hand sewed the legs together with red wool yarn.

Santa’s Jacket

From the remaining red felt, I cut a slit into the fabric and a small oval for the neckline.
Sewing Santa suit

I fitted this around the Santa doll and then cut away small sections to shape the sleeves.
I hand stitched the sides and sleeves together.

Then I needle felted a trim around Santa’s jacket using white merino roving.

Santa Hat

With remaining bits of the red felt I cut a triangle shape for his hat and then needle felted some white merino wool for the brim of his hat.

felting Santa hat

Santa’s Boots

I hand spun a few ounces of black Shetland wool for knitting the Santa boots. You can use any pure wool yarn. The boots are knitted in a similar fashion to Santa’s legs.

Knit Santa Pattern

Christmas is fast approaching, so time to start making your Christmas crafts.

Here is a free knitting pattern for making a Santa Claus doll.
The body has been handknit using pure DK weight wool and size 4mm knitting needles. I have used merino wool roving for the body stuffing, so that this can be felted in the washing machine.

Using a blanket stitch, sew the sides of the arms together and fill the arms with wool stuffing.
Using the decrease stitches on the shoulders as a guide, sew the top of the arm to the shoulder area of the body.
Using the same method as for the neck, tighten the wrists with a strand of yarn.

Legs
Fold the cast-off edge in half and stitch together with a blanket stitch to create the foot of the doll.
Fill with wool roving and continue to stitch up the back of the leg.
Fill the leg with wool roving and sew up the top opening.

Wet Felted Easter Eggs

How to wet felt Easter eggs in 5 minutes – This project makes small quail size felted eggs. Good for a beginner felters of all ages.

felted quail eggs

    Time required: 5 minutes

    Supplies needed:

Small quantities of wool roving, both natural white and dyed colours
    (Merino wool top works best)
    Small bits of wool yarn
    1 bowl of hot water
    Dish detergent
    1 bowl of cold water

Fill a bowl with hot tap water and a bit of dish detergent.
Fill a second bowl with cold tap water.
Take a small piece of white wool roving and form it into a ball shape.
Take another bit of coloured wool roving or wool yarn and wrap it around the formed ball.
Dip the ball of wool into the bowl of hot soapy tap water.
Rub the wool roving in the palm of your hand, forming a ball shape.
Continue to rub it vigorously and continue to dip it in the hot soapy water.
The wool will start to harden and form a ball shape.
When it starts to harden, dip it in the cold water and continue to roll it between the palms of your hands.
Alternate between dipping the wool ball in the hot water and cold water, squeezing out excess water.
When the wool ball has become quite hard (about 3-4 minutes of rolling)
Pinch and shape the ball into an egg shape.
Continue to roll in your hands and dip into the cold and hot water
until you are happy with the consistency of the hardened felt.
