Paper Yarn Placemats

This pattern is woven in tabby but use different types of yarns giving an interesting effect. The placemats and table runner are woven using 22/2 cottolin for warp. This is woven in a thick/thin rep weave, using paper yarn and hemp single ply tow yarn as the weft. You can substitute the hemp with a single ply linen yarn, a cotton yarn or the same type of cottolin that you used in the warp.

This pattern will make 4 placemats and 1 table runner.

placemat weaving draft

Weft

For the edges of each placemat, weave 2 inches of tabby using the 22/2 cottolin yarn.
The placemat is woven in tabby using 2 shuttles alternating shots of:
Paper yarn – 430 ypp (White)
6/1 Hemp – 1800 ypp (various colours)
Weft: 16 ppi
To weave with paper yarn, the yarn must be damp. Wind the yarn onto a bobbin. Fill a bowl of water and soak the bobbin for a few minutes to wet the yarn. Wipe the bobbin with a dry wash cloth to remove the excess water.

Placemat Pattern length: 16 inches
For these placemats, I used a different colour of hemp weft for each placemat, so that each one is slightly different, but complementary.

Table Runner Pattern length:

30 inches
The table runner was woven with varied stripes of colour: red, green, blue, yellow.

Finishing

Cut the hem between each placemat, and sew.

Care and Washing

It is best not to wash paper placemats in the washing machine. Rather, they can be wiped clean with a damp cloth, or can be gently handwashed.

Weaving Draft: Birdseye

Bird’s Eye drafts are one of my favourite types of drafts. There are several variations of threading and treadling that you can choose from. Bird’s Eye can be woven with very fine cotton and linen yarns for placemats or tablecloths or thicker wool for cozy blankets.

Rigid Heddle Pickup Pattern: rhpickup68

Quite a simple design but effective. This narrow band has been woven using my new Sami 2 hole rigid heddle loom (2HRH – The Beaivi Loom).

Isin Sami hat

The ground warp is threaded through the bottom row of holes and slots – alternating between hole and slot for each warp thread.
The ground warp is 12/2 worsted spun wool.
Warp length: 4 yards
White 12/2 wool: 12 ends
Blue 12/2 wool: 38 ends
Green 12/2 wool: 4 ends
Red 12/2 wool: 4 ends
Yellow 12/2 wool: 4 ends
Total: 62 ends
Thread the warp ends following the weaving draft below.

The pattern warp is woven using 7 warp ends of 6/2 worsted spun white wool that are threaded in the second (top) row of holes on the weaving reed.

The weft is woven with blue 12/2 worsted wool yarn. The pattern is picked up following the pattern draft.

I am weaving this with a slightly loose tension because I will be felting it afterwards.
I am planning to use it as a border for a handspun/handknit sweater that I am making.

Weaving Project – Twill Tabby Towels: aa032503

These colourful 8 shaft teatowels make a nice spring combo for your kitchen. The towels are woven with 6/3 white cotton and bordered with a 1/2″ edge of natural unbleached cotton. The weft uses a single ply dyed hemp yarn. You may substitute with a No. 10 or No. 12 single ply linen.

The towels are woven to a length of 26″ each. Weave the background twill for 16 picks, then weave the pattern tabby blocks for 12 picks. Add some variety to the towels by using different coloured weft yarns, in solids or stripes.

Finishing:

Remove the finished warp from the loom. Machine wash, dry and iron. Cut the towels to length. Using Twill tape, fold and sew a loop for hanging at the end of the towel and machine stitch the hems.

Weaving Project – Hot tub towels: aa051401

Colorful cotton and chenille weave up easily into soft and absorbent towels for your hot tub or bath. These towels are woven in a simple twill, but will give the beginner weaver practice in using 2 shuttles. The pattern will make 2 towels, 24″ x 54″ finished size.

Weaving Instructions

This pattern uses 2 types of warp and weft:

unmercerized 8/2 cotton (Turquoise color in the draft)

and cotton chenille (apricot color in the draft)

weaving draft

This weave creates small squares of cotton surrounded by a frame of chenille, making the towel both soft and durable.

Weave with 2 shuttles, 1 with cotton chenille and 1 with 8/2 cotton. Weave 2 shots of chenille, in tabby and then weave 4 shots of 8/2 cotton, in twill, according to the treadling plan.

Weaving Draft

Finishing

Weave 2 inches of tabby using the 8/2 cotton yarn, at each end of the towels. This will allow for seam finishing of the edges.

Remove the warp from the loom, and knot the ends. Put the warp through a wash and dry cyle in your washer to wet finish the fabric.

Machine stitch the edges with a rolled hem.

Rigid Heddle Variation

If you have a smaller table loom, or a rigid heddle loom, you can do a smaller version of these towels for use as hand towels. On a 2 shaft rigid heddle loom, the towels can be woven in tabby. Use 2 shuttles, one with cotton chenille and 1 with 8/2 cotton. Weave 2 picks of cotton chenille, then weave 4 picks of 8/2 cotton.

Hot Tub Towel Challenge

Some of our Forum members wove these towels and encountered problems with worming using the cotton chenille. Some Chenille yarns do worm and can be difficult to work with. This is due to the yarn being a single ply and the fuzzy bits of the yarn have been cut, leading to inconsistent results when working with it.
Hot Tub Towels Challenge
I can only comment that I wove these towels in 2001 – and gave them to my son. I visited him a few weeks ago, and he was still using the towels. The colours have faded a bit but the towels are still in good shape – no worming after 10 years of use.

Treadling

I wove these placemats as a sampler, varying the treadling between Singles and Pairs.

Finishing

Each placemat was woven to a length of 18″ on the loom. Handfinishing was done on the loom using Hemstitch finish. Between each placemat, the warp was advanced 2 inches, to allow a fringe.

After weaving, I cut the warp from the loom, and put it through a wash and dry
cycle in my washer. After washing, I ironed the placemats and trimmed the fringes.

Variation: Chenille Towels

handwoven chenille towels

Instead of using 8/2 cotton for the weft, you can also try using cotton chenille. In this sample I wove 1450 ypp cotton chenille for the pattern shots of the draft alternating with 8/2 cotton for the tabby shots. I think that this combination would be nice for bath towels.
