Weaving Twill Tapestry: bltwilltap

I had the good fortune to be able to take a workshop on Twill Tapestry with weaver and tapestry artist, Kaija Rautiainen a couple of years ago. The workshop was held at the Kootenay Gallery of Art, History and Science in Castlegar, BC.
Weaving Between the Lines
This was an exhibition of contemporary British Columbia tapestry sponsored by the B.C. Society of Tapestry Artists (B.C. STARS) and the Canadian Craft Museum. The exhibition was curated by veteran tapestry maker and art educator Jane Kidd. Weaving Between The Lines includes works by the artists Anne Clark, Marion Cragg, Gabriela Diaconu, Laura Ford, Barbara Heller, Alison Keenan, Lois Kennedy, Margaret Klajnart, Mieko Konaka, Karen Leitch, Anthea Mallison, Jane MacKenzie, Kaija Rautiainen, and Jane Kidd (Curator).

Craft Association of BC
If you ever have the chance to take a workshop with Kaija, I highly recommend it. Also, be sure to drop by her studio if you are visiting in Vancouver, BC. You can find Kaija and Barbara Heller in their studio on Granville Island.

Twill Tapestry Technique

Kaija Rautiainen developed this technique based on a Finnish style of double cloth, only she uses a tapestry design on one side of the cloth.

Place a cartoon design behind the warp, as you do in regular tapestry.

Warp

Use 4/8 cotton, seine twine or linen # 4 or 6

Sett: 10 epi

Use a dark coloured warp, because the warp shows through the tapestry and becomes part of the design element.

Design Weft

The design weft is hand manipulated.
Design weft should be about 1/2 or 2/3 thickness of the background weft.

Wind the design weft into small butterflies

Background Weft

The background weft is wound onto bobbins on a regular shuttle.

Alternate between the background weft and the design weft.
In the Draft shown above, Shaft 4 – weaves the Inlay.

Shafts 1,2,3 – Background

Shaft 3 – Inlay

Shafts 1,2,4 – Background

Shaft 2 – Inlay

Shafts 1,3,4 – Background

Shaft 1 – Inlay

Shafts 2,3,4 – Background
This creates a double layer of cloth. On the back all you see is the Twill cloth. The Inlay design weaves on top of the background.

Saami Pickup Weaving Pattern: blsami6

A weaving draft for making a traditional Saami belt.
This type of weaving pattern was traditionally woven on a small rigid heddle type of loom. Some of the Saami heddle reeds also had an additional hole in them, that was for the pattern warp threads, so that they could be picked up easily from the warp.

Weaving Draft – Krokbragd: blkrokbragd

Krokbragd is a Norwegian 3 shaft pointed draft. It is a weft-faced weave with floats on one side and a tighter weave on the other.

Krokbragd Rug
Krokbragd Rug

krokbragd weaving draft

Krokbragd is usually woven in stripes of 3 colours. Other colours can be added to the pattern sequence but using only a maximum of 3 at a time. The treadling sequence doesn’t vary. It is woven in a repeat of 12, 23, 31.

A multitude of design possibilities is available to the weaver by varying the placement of the weft colours.

I took this draft from one of my weaving books.

Birgitta Kuik kindly wrote to me to explain Krokbragd weaving further. It is always good to share knowledge and to learn more from other experienced weavers.
Thank you Birgitta.

I live in Norway and weave quite a bit of krokbragd and your draft is not correct. Krokbragd is mostly woven on 3 or 4 shafts and are woven 1 shaft at a time. So tie up is 1 shaft down 2 up and weaving is 1,2,3,1,2,3 etc

Scandinavian notation, 1 shaft back, read from bottom-up.
3-skaft krokbragd binding – Tie-Up

Weave 1,2,3,12,3,1,2,3 etc. Normally you have 4 weft-picks to get a colored square.

3-skaft krokbragd binding med ekstra 2-skaft ( tramp vekslevis 2 og 4 for 2-skaft/tabby)
3 shaft krokbragd with ekstra 2-shaft/tabby

Weave 1,2,3 for krokbragd, weave 2,4,2,4 etc. For tabby. Often used in beginning or end of an åkle.

Weaving of the above example.   4 picks = 1 square

Krunebord m prik lang – example of a traditional pattern used as a border

Krokabord lang

Below
example from an old åkle. My weaving program doesn’t support boundweave so I use the first 3 in the pattern as threadling. So it is first 1 red pick, 2 white picks (repeat 4 times), then 2 red picks , one white (repeat 4 times) , 1 white+2 red (4*), 1 black, 1 white ,1 red (4*) You get used to this kind of notation.

If you want to do the pattern perfect then you have to know that when you weave a prik (e.g. the black dot) you have to weave the last pick not as 1 black,1 white,1 red but as 1 white, 1 white, 1 red. Otherwise the figure is not completely symmetrical. But most weavers here don’t know that anymore.

You also have krokbragd on 4 shafts :

The Result
Krokbragd Weaving

Or dobbel krokbragd on 3 and 4 shafts.

Or krokbragd with rosebragd hovling (threading)
