Sock Knitting Pattern – Spiral Socks: blspiralsocks

SPIRAL SOCKS from “Patterns from THE WEB” – June 1982 edition [btw the WEB was a zine, now in recess produced for the NZSWWS up until about ’89]

A simple formula for making spiral socks, which are ideal for wear in gumboots and so easy for young children to pull on. Also – they don’t grow out of them in a hurry, as the feet fit where required.

Using a set of 4 #8 needles with points at each end, and double knitting wool, cast on a number of stitches divisible by four. [say 36 for a child]. Cast these on loosely, or use a larger gauge needle. Divide stitches evenly on 3 needles. Rib in k1 p1 [or k2p2] for 2″ or length desired.

Then k2 tog and continue with k3 p1 ’til length is required, which is for leg and foot. [say 10-12″]. You will see that losing one stitch at the beginning of the pattern makes the purl stitch move on one each time and spiral effect allows the sock to fit snugly around the angle at any length of foot. The heel deos not always come in the same place, so longer wear is assured.

To finish, make a round toe as follows:

1st round: k9, k2tog, [k4 k2tog] 4 times, [30sts]

2nd and alternate rounds: knit

3rd round: [k3 k2tog] 6 times [24sts]

5th round: [k2 k2tog] 6 times [18sts]

7th round: [k1 k2tog] 6 times [12sts]

8th round: k2 tog 6 times

Break off wool & thread throught the 6 sts. Finish off.

If making a larger pair say 48sts, make toes as follows:

1st round: You will have 47 sts]. k13, k2tog [k6 k2tog] 4times [42sts]

2nd and alternate rounds: knit

3rd round: [k5 k2tog] 6 times [36sts]

5th round: [k4 k2tog] 6 times [30sts]

7th round: [k3 k2tog] 6 times [24sts]

9th round: [k2 k2tog] 6 times [18sts]

11th round: [k1 k2 tog] 6 times [12sts]

13th round: k2 tog 6 times [6sts]

Break off wool & thread through 6sts. Finish off

Hat Knitting Pattern: blhat

handknit hat

This knitting pattern works well for handspun yarns. You can knit it to any size and gauge of yarn.

Knit a sample and a needle size that is appropriate for your handspun yarn.

Measure the circumference of your head or use another hat that fits you well. Multiply this measurement by the number of stitches to the inch in your sample, to estimate the number of stitches you require to cast on.

For example

Head size: 20 inches

# stitches per inch: 3

Cast on: 60 stitches onto double point needles

Knit in the round in K1, P1 ribbing for 1.5 inches

Knit in stockinette stitch for 4 inches, until the hat measures 5.5 inches total.

Divide the hat into 6 equal portions and mark with markers. These will be the places where the decrease occurs.

e.g. over 60 stitches

K2 together, knit 8, repeat to the end of the row.

Knit.

Decrease 6 stitches evenly across on every other row. Repeat until 8 stitches remain. Break off the yarn and sew it through each of the stitches to cast off.

Wash the hat in hot soapy water to slightly full it. Rinse in cool water and let dry.

Felted Mitten Pattern: blfeltedmitts

This pattern was originally posted in our Forum, by Marina. I think it would work with handspun wools as well.

At Thursday’s Chat, several people were interested in making fulled mittens. I said I had an old pattern and would post it here. Here it is. Those of you who aren’t interested in weaving – please forgive the departure from the usual topics!
Marina

Felted Mittens

To fit women’s (men’s) hands. Final fitting is done in felting. Directions are for the smaller size, with larger size in parenthesis.

Materials:

One 3.5 oz. skein Brunswick Germantown Knitting Worsted. Do not use Superwash wool or blends. Sets of double-pointed needles, sizes 8 or 9 and 0 or 1 for cuff ribbing.

Gauge:

In circular stockinette st, approximately 9 sts and 12 rows equal 2″. Mittens are fulled and shrunk until proper size. Gauge after fulling – 10 sts and 15 rows equal 2″.

Right mitten
CO 44 (52) sts. Join and work 3 rnds of rev St st (purl). K 18 (20) rnds. Change to tiny needles. Work k2, p2 ribbing for 6 rnds. With larger needles, k 6 (8) rnds. Remainder of mitten worked in St st (knit).

Gusset

Thumb

Transfer 11 (13) sts from holder to 2 needles and pick up 5 (7) sts from back of thumb on 3rd needle, 16 (20) sts total. Work 11 (14) rnds. Dec as in palm, every rnd until 4 sts rem. Break yarn and pull through sts then sew ends through back of work to fasten off.

Left Mitten

Work as R mitten until gusset. Work first rnd of gusset until 6 sts rem. Place marker, M1, k3, M1, place marker, k3. Inc sts inside markers to match R mitten incs. Work palm and thumb as R mitten.

Fulling
Machine wash in hot water with strong soap (it takes 3-6 washings) and lay flat to air dry. Insert hand in mitten between washings and stretch to shape. Stop felting when they fit! Warm rinse. Once felted, wash like other fine woolens. Use a stiff brush to raise the nap.

P.S.: If anyone knows what M1 stands for, pleae let me know. I think it means “increase 1 st”.
