Making Handmade Felt: aa110900

Felt is made of wool that has been compressed with heat and agitation. Felt is very versatile and and requires only a minimum of equipment.

alpaca felt
Felt is often used in children’s crafts. Felt can also be sewn into hats, clothing, pillows or other useful items. Making felt can be a fun afternoon activity for you and your kids.

You will need a flat surface to work on, one where it doesn’t matter if it gets wet. You will also need hot water, laundry soap, a straw beach mat, a few towels, and, of course, some wool.

In summer months, I make felt outdoors, in a kid’s swimming pool. You will need access to hot water. An electric kettle will work fine or a hose attached to your hot water tap. In winter, I make felt successfully in my bath tub.

When planning a project, remember that felt will shrink in size so you will need to make allowances for this. For example, a 24″ square will shrink about 20% to approx 20″ finished size.
To make a 20″ square piece of felt, you will need approx. 5 – 6 oz. of pure wool roving.

Here’s How

Free instructions for making felt, illustrated with photos.

Felt Boot Liners

Warm up your toes this winter, with woolly boot liners.

Following the directions for making felt, make a 15″ square piece. This will shrink to approx. 12′ square.

Trace the outline of your boots onto a piece of paper, and use this as a pattern for cutting your boot liner.

Felted Christmas Ornaments

Start with a piece of dry, handmade felt.

The felt can be cut into shapes – cookie cutters are useful for this.

Just like with the “store bought” kind, you can safely cut the felt. You can add decorative stitching around the felt pieces and embellish them with sequins, embroider with brightly coloured yarns or sew on some rick rack or other braiding.

Felted Christmas Stocking

felted Christmas stocking

  • Make a piece of felt approximately 18″ square.
  • Cut 2 stocking shapes.
  • Machine stitch the 2 pieces together.
  • You can either leave the stocking as is, or decorate it with applique, decorative stitching or other embellishments.

Felted Placemat: blfeltmat

Your children will have fun making their own personal place mat.
To make this placemat follow the directions for Making Felt.

Make a 24″ x 16″ rectangle with the wool roving. This should shrink to a piece of felt approx. 20″ x 14″ in size.

For the final decorative layer, let your kids make the design. They can use different coloured wool roving as well as short lengths of yarn. Use pure wool yarn only and cover it with a thin layer of the wool roving, to secure it in place.

After the felt is fully dry (it takes about 24 hours) trim the edges to the desired size of the placemat. (approx. 18″ x 12″)

The edges don’t have to be even. A slightly irregular shape can add an interesting design element. Keep the felt trimmings. They can be used for decorative appliques in other projects.

Felt Place Mat

Seam Binding Edge Finish

Sew some seam binding around the edge to finish.

Sew a row of zig-zag stitch around the edge of the mat to secure the edges Working from the reverse side of the mat, pin the seam binding around the edge of the mat and stitch in place with a straight seam.

Trim the edges close to the seamline with scissors.
Press lightly with a steam iron.

Working from the right side of the mat, turn the seam binding over the edge.
Tuck the edge of the seam binding under, and top stitch it in place.

Press the edges again lightly with a steam iron.

Felted Balls: blfeltballs

In our Discussion Forum, Lucy described how she uses leftover wool to make felt balls, cat toys and pin cushions.

Our guild sells most of the usual hand wovens and knitted goods but it is rather sad to see the little children’s faces when they cannot find anything that is within their budgets . So I have been making felt balls, any time I am finishing an item I use all the snippets ,bits of less than lovely fleece and so on to make the cores, add a final wrapping of realy nice wool,(I often do this on a tray while watching T.V) when they hold together fairly well I tie them into a sock and throw them into the washer , with coloured things in case the colours run. I sell the plain small ones for a dollar, the bigger ones , fancy ones or those with bells inside are more expencive, up to $5. If I make the inside colourfull and cut it in half now it is a pin cushion and I get $3 for them , Since they are made out of stuff that might be waste otherwise,I can sell them for a tiny price the kids like them, and I notice that quite a few go home with the grown-ups too!

I wet felt them. I generally have several on hand invarious stages of construction sitting in a dish by the sink and when I happen to be hanging around the sink I soap and run hot water over them I get them to the soft felt stage at this time.

In the evening I will sit with a tray on my lap and roll a couple around…..(a good thriller helps to give a good squeez during the exciting parts) Getting the outside just right takes a little fiddling but it is still not rocket science, I don’t want to make a big deal of it , it’s sort of relaxing after I have spant a tough day at the loom to do something so forgiving.

I wash them in the washer in hot water and detergent with the rest of the family wash and dry them in the dryer, be sure to take them out of the sock before you put them in the dryer as they are hard to get loose from the sock sometimes. Put them back in the sock to dry or they may shed or pick up unwanted stuff in the dryer. If they are hard felted dogs can’t wreck them and if you put a little catnip inside cats adore them.

How to Make Felt: how_felt

Felt is made of layers of wool that have been compressed through heat and friction. Here is how to make handmade felt.

Difficulty Level:

Easy

Time Required:

3 hours

Here’s How:

  1. You will need a flat surface to work on, where it doesn’t matter if it gets wet. (outside, floor, countertop or large table) Place a large towel onto the flat surface, and cover it with a straw beach mat.
  2. Pull the clean wool roving into short sections, x-about 4 – 6 inches in length, depending on the length of the wool staple.
  3. Place these wool pieces evenly across the beach mat. Lay them all in one direction,(vertically) overlapping each piece slightly, until the beach mat is fully covered, creating a 24″ square.
  4. Sprinkle the layer lightly with laundry soap. Place a second layer of wool pieces over the first layer, horizontally, and sprinkle on a bit more laundry soap.
  5. Repeat the layers of wool again, until the batt measures x-about 1.5 – 2 inches in height. Make sure each layer alternates in direction, vertically/horizontally.
  6. The top layer can be decorative, using different coloured wools.
  7. Fold the remaining length of beach mat over the wool batt, and roll up the beach mat.
  8. Fill your bathtub with x-about 1 – 2 inches of hot tap water. Place the rolled beach mat into the bathtub and roll the mat back and forth, working your hands evenly across the mat.
  9. Keep the mat rolling in the hot water for x-about 3 – 4 minutes. It is friction that causes the wool to felt.
  10. Remove the mat from the bathtub and place it on the towel. Carefully unroll the mat, and turn the felt 1/4 turn. The felt is quite fragile at this point, so be gentle.
  11. Reroll the mat and put it back into the bathtub. If the water has cooled, drain the tub and add more hot water. Roll the mat again for x-about 3 – 4 minutes.
  12. Turn the felt another 3 times, and reroll for x-about 5 minutes between each turn.
  13. Test the felt by rubbing it with your finger. The fibres shouldn’t move and the felt should be quite thick. If it is still soft, turn it again and keep rolling it in the hot water.
  14. Remove the felt from the beach mat and rinse in cool water.
  15. Roll the felt in a towel, place it on the floor and stomp on it, to remove the excess water. Lay flat to dry.

Tips:

  1. You should have at least 4 layers of wool, criss-crossed. For thicker felt, use more layers.
  2. As you are placing the layers of wool, make sure that they are even – no holes.
  3. You can make felt outside, in the summer. A child’s swimming pool works great. You just need a hot water source.
  4. The felt can be cut and sewn into a wide variety of projects, hats, bags, vests, Christmas decorations.
  5. While the felt is wet, it can also be shaped by placing over a mold and letting it dry.
