Santa suit

In the previous article I provided instructions for knitting a Santa doll.

Santa needs a Santa suit, so I thought that I would make him one from handmade felt.

I started by felting a fairly thin piece of red felt (approx 15″x15″ Square)

Felt Making

How to Make Handmade Felt

[sc name=”adsense-in-ad”]

Santa’s Trousers
After felting I cut a piece of this felt that was wide enough to fit around Santa’s tummy, and long enough to fit his legs. Then I cut partly up the center of the piece of felt – to fit around his legs.
Santa Felted Pants
I hand stitched around the cut piece with a length of wool yarn, to strengthen the edges.

Santa's felt trousers

I then hand sewed the legs together with red wool yarn.

Santa’s Jacket

From the remaining red felt, I cut a slit into the fabric and a small oval for the neckline.
Sewing Santa suit

I fitted this around the Santa doll and then cut away small sections to shape the sleeves.
I hand stitched the sides and sleeves together.

Then I needle felted a trim around Santa’s jacket using white merino roving.

Santa Hat

With remaining bits of the red felt I cut a triangle shape for his hat and then needle felted some white merino wool for the brim of his hat.

Santa’s Boots

I hand spun a few ounces of black Shetland wool for knitting the Santa boots. You can use any pure wool yarn. The boots are knitted in a similar fashion to Santa’s legs.

Knit Santa Pattern

Christmas is fast approaching, so time to start making your Christmas crafts.

Here is a free knitting pattern for making a Santa Claus doll.
The body has been handknit using pure DK weight wool and size 4mm knitting needles. I have used merino wool roving for the body stuffing, so that this can be felted in the washing machine.

Finishing

Body
Sew the top of the head and back seam using a blanket stitch.
Stuff the body with merino wool roving.
Sew the bottom seam using a blanket stitch.

Neck
Using 1 strand of wool yarn, without an end knot, insert a tapestry needle at the back seam, under the first row of the head increase. Weave the needle through the stitches in the neck and pull the thread to tighten the neck. Tie a double knot and weave the yarn ends into the doll.

Arms
Using a blanket stitch, sew the sides of the arms together and fill the arms with wool stuffing.
Using the decrease stitches on the shoulders as a guide, sew the top of the arm to the shoulder area of the body.
Using the same method as for the neck, tighten the wrists with a strand of yarn.

Legs
Fold the cast-off edge in half and stitch together with a blanket stitch to create the foot of the doll.
Fill with wool roving and continue to stitch up the back of the leg.
Fill the leg with wool roving and sew up the top opening.
Stitch the legs to the bottom of the body.

Christmas stocking motifs: aa110804c

Christmas stockings are fun to knit because you don’t have to be exact on the size, you can use up leftover yarns and you only need to make one. For this stocking I used handspun yarns.

Alphabet Patterns

Continuing in the light green colour as background, knit the Name of the person the
stocking is for. Here are the motif patterns for a knitted
alphabet.

Remember that you are starting the stocking from the top so you will need
to knit the letters upside down.

Continue knitting the sock in various colours and designs using the motif patterns
below, or have fun and make up some of your own.

The Heel of the Sock

Knit in patterns until the leg of the sock measures 10-12 inches.

Divide the stitches and place half the stitches onto a stitch holder, or leave on 1 or
2 double point needles.

The back of the heel is knit using half of the sock width (27 stitches)

Changing to red coloured yarn, continue in plain knit until the back of the heel
measures 1-1/2 inches.

Turning the heel:

Start the turning on the heel on the right side of the work.

Knit 16 stitches

Knit 2 together, Knit 1, Turn

Purl 7, purl 2 together, purl 1, Turn

Knit 8, knit 2 together, knit 1, Turn

Purl 9, purl 2 together, purl 1, Turn

Knit 10, knit 2 together, knit 1, Turn

Purl 11, purl 2 together, purl 1, Turn

Knit 12, knit 2 together, knit 1, Turn

Purl 13, purl 2 together, purl 1, Turn

Knit across the following row

Pick up 7 stitches along the side of the heel

Change yarn to Dark Blue.

Knit across the stitches that were left on the double pointed needles or stitch
holder.

Pick up 7 stitches along the other side of the heel.

Knit in the round for the rest of the sock.

Decrease at the gusset of the sock:

Knit across the top part of the sock (27 stitches)

Knit across the 7 picked up stitches

Knit across the bottom heel of the sock

Knit 5 stitches across the picked up stitches, Knit 2 together.

Knit across the top part of the sock (27 stitches)

Knit 2 together, Knit across the remaining 5 picked up stitches.

Continue knitting in the round, decreasing as above at the gusset points, for 4 more
rows ( 56 stitches)

Continue knitting in pattern motifs until the foot of the sock measures 3-4
inches.

Toe Decrease:

Change to red coloured yarn for the toe of the sock.

Knit 1, knit 2 together, knit 22, knit 2 together, knit 2, knit 2 together, knit 22,
knit 2 together, knit 1 (52 stitches)

Knit 1, knit 2 together, knit 20, knit 2 together, knit 2, knit 2 together, knit 20,
knit 2 together, knit 1 (48 stitches)

Continue to knit as above, reducing 4 stitches per row, until 16 stitches remain.

Sewn Toe Cast-Off:

Break yarn, leaving a tail about 4 times as long as the
circumference of the sock.

Thread a tapestry needle.

Sew forward (right to left) through two stitches as if to purl, leave the stitches
on.

Sew backward (left to right) through one stitch as if to knit and remove the
stitch.

Repeat from * until you run out of stitches. Work in tail on the inside of the sock and
trim any excess.

Machine Felting

To strengthen and thicken the sock so that gifts don’t stretch
the sock out, I machine felted it after sewing in the yarn ends.

I have a front loading washing machine. I put the sock into the machine – by itself and
ran a rinse cycle using warm water.

Needle felted ornaments: aa112510

A quick and easy way to make your own needle felted Christmas decorations is to use a cookie cutter as a form. This is a good project if you are a beginner at needle felting. In order to do needle felting you will need a small piece of foam rubber or a pillow on which to work.

Needle Felted Ornaments
Needle Felted Ornaments

Needle Felt Santa
Needle Felted Santa

Place a thin layer of merino wool top onto the pillow – the approximate size of the decoration that you are going to make (running up and down)

Place another thin layer of wool roving on top of the previous layer, but running in the opposite direction (running across)

Place a third thin layer of wool roving on top of the other 2 layers, again running in the opposite direction from the previous layer (up and down), so that each layer is perpendicular to each other.

Turn the cookie cutter over and begin to needle felt the wool. You can use a general purpose or a fast felting needle for this.

Tuck all the edges of wool that are outside of the form, into the cookie cutter form.

Be sure to push the wool into the corners of the form so that the pattern has definition and felt the edges until they are quite firm.

When one side of the decoration has been partially felted, remove the form and turn the wool over and place it back into the form to felt the other side.

Once the decorations have been felted you can embellish them with sequins, beads, bits of yarn or embroidery stitching.
