Sandra was fortunate to be able to attend the recent Handweavers, Spinners and Dyers of Alberta Conference held in Edmonton, AB. She took her digital camera along and posted photos to our Forum. I have compiled these for easier viewing. Thank you, Sandra, for the terrific pics!
The challenge was to design 3 warps, arranged side by side on the loom, using mixed fibers (ie different fiber contents, thicknesses, textures etc), each 5 inches wide.
The first was to be minimum 5 different smooth yarns from one color family, to create an effect of one color or value. It was to be threaded in a straight draw on 4 shafts. We were asked not to use black, grey, white, beige or brown for this warp.
The second warp was to be a small, repeated stripe pattern, using 3 or 4 colors, any fiber or texture. The stripe pattern was to be repeated several times through the 5" warp. This warp was to be threaded as either M's and O's or summer and winter, using drafts from Davison's "Handweavers Pattern Book".
The third warp was to be a large, bold stripe pattern, not repeated across the 5", using various colors and any fiber or texture. This warp was to be threaded using a small overshot pattern from Davison's "Handweavers Pattern Book", either Italian Diamond or Rose Valley.
We were to use warp wrappings to help us design the warps, determine sett and sley, and (I found) to help with weaving some of the samples.
It was suggested to bring a large variety of weft yarns, trying to include colors from all areas of the color wheel, as well as novelty yarns, metallics, non-yarn type wefts (ribbon, fur, beads).
Further details about the workshops have been posted in our Forum.
