If you wish to participate in this project, check with your local Cancer Society to see if hats are needed in your area. When you knit, crochet or sew some hats, with your handspun yarns, please post a picture in our Forum. I will then move a copy of the photos to these pages.

Erin's Hats

Dear daughter Erin (17 years old) came to me on Monday night... *Mom..I wanna crochet!* Taught her once a long long time ago... when she was eight or nine. So I handed her a hook and some yarn. Off she went.

She stayed up till 12:30 in the morning, crocheting and ripping, crocheting and ripping....

Came to me Tuesday morning.. *Mom?? How do you do a increase a single crochet?* So I just verbally told her.

*I'm gonna make a hat* she announces! And off she goes.

Comes back a few hours later, proudly sporting this! And NO pattern, NO help!

Now she went out and bought two more skeins of yarn, she read about making hats for kids who are undergoing chemotherapy. She already has another one finshed today!

Veggie Hats

These wonderful hats are knitted from worsted-weight soft acrylic (Patons) on # 7 needles. You'll need a 16" circular needle and a set of 4 double pointed needles.

Start by casting on however many stitches you need to knit your child's size, but it must be divisible by 8. (Small: 88 sts., 2-4 yrs. - 96 sts., 6 yrs. - 104 sts.) Use circular needles. Knit 1 or 1-1/2 inches in ribbing. Continue in stockinette until you come to the crown of the head in the color of the vegetable. Now start adding the green "stem": knit one stitch in green every eighth stitch all around. Next round knit one green st on either side of the one in previous round, repeating all around (3 green sts now). Continue increasing the number of green stitches until all your stitches are green. Change to 4 needles. Knit 2 together every eighth stitch all around. Keep decreasing in each round at the same intervals, until only 6 stitches remain. Keep knitting these 6 sts for about an inch or so - this is the little stem that sticks up on top of the head. Draw the stitches together and secure end.
