Apocynum cannabinum
Both Hemp Dogbane and Spreading Dogbane were important crops for the First Nations people. The fiber was used for sewing and weaving baskets, making rope, traps and other types of twine.
Intriguing World of Weeds
The Dogbane stems were gathered and soaked in water to soften them. When soft the outer bark is removed, leaving a long brown fibre that could be spun and woven into clothing, fishing nets and rope. The roots of Hemp dogbane were also used for medicinal purposes.
