Needle Felted Christmas Ornaments

A quick and easy way to make your own felted Christmas decorations is to use a cookie cutter as a form. This is a good project if you are a beginner at needle felting.

In order to do needle felting you will need a small piece of foam rubber or a pillow on which to work.

Place a thin layer of merino wool top onto the pillow - the approximate size of the decoration that you are going to make (running up and down)

Place another thin layer of wool roving on top of the previous layer, but running in the opposite direction (running across)

Place a third thin layer of wool roving on top of the other 2 layers, again running in the opposite direction from the previous layer (up and down), so that each layer is perpendicular to each other.

Turn the cookie cutter over and begin to needle felt the wool. You can use a general purpose or a fast felting needle for this.

Tuck all the edges of wool that are outside of the form, into the cookie cutter form.

Be sure to push the wool into the corners of the form so that the pattern has definition and felt the edges until they are quite firm.

When one side of the decoration has been partially felted, remove the form and turn the wool over and place it back into the form to felt the other side.

Once the decorations have been felted you can embellish them with sequins, beads, bits of yarn or embroidery stitching.
