Biosteel is a new type of yarn that was developed for the soldier of tomorrow. - or is it?
MOAA Super Warriors
Tomorrow's soldier may be wearing suits made of spider silk and goat, lightweight and 5 times stronger than steel.

Genetic Engineering: Biosteel
Bio-steel is the end product of a genetic marriage between spider and goat. It was developed at Nexia where scientists took a spider gene, injected it into a single cell of a goat egg and produced a goat named Willow.

Man Made Spiders Silk
Nexia Technologies Inc. produced spider silk fibre from man-made fibre.

Nexia Biotechnologies Inc.
Nexia Biosteel Techonology
"Nexia has decided to refocus fibre development towards biopolymer sales and specialized nano-scale fibre applications for spider silk and away from traditional fibres and yarns. This decision was prompted by the emerging interest in nanofibres and by the ongoing technical challenges of producing bulk, cost competitive spider silk fibres with superior mechanical properties, especially strength."
Although this was an interesting concept and I was looking forward to someday weaving myself a vest of Biosteel, it seems that I will have to wait a bit longer...
And go watch Spiderman on DVD instead, while I spin and weave with slightly more conventional fibres:
