Working with Fungi Dyes

Did you know that mushrooms can yield more stunning colours than other natural dyes? I went to Finland to take a course with Kirsti Palmén to learn how to extract colour from these fungi.

Although mushrooms were probably used as a dyestuff for centuries, most of this knowledge has been lost. In the past 10-15 years we have started to experiment with using mushrooms again for colour. I find this a very exciting and uncharted area of natural dyes to explore.

When gathering mushrooms there are some precautions that you need to be aware of. Many mushrooms are considered to be endangered, so check with your local forestry, parks or conservation officials before gathering or picking mushrooms.

Many mushrooms are also poisonous, so take precautions in picking them.
Wear protective gloves and clothing.

  • Don't eat or ingest any mushrooms unless you are absolutely positive that they are safe to eat.
  • When picking any mushrooms for eating, keep a few in a plastic bag for identification in case you do get ill from eating them.

  • Use separate pots and utensils for dyeing than what you use for your kitchen.
  • Try to do your dyeing outdoors to avoid breathing any fumes or smells from the dyepots.
