Winter is a time for woolly hats. Here is a quick pattern that makes good use of your handspun yarns. The sides of the hat are knit in garter stitch and the top is in plain knit.
Cast on 48 stitches. If you are using handspun yarns, you should knit a few rows, and check that this hat is the correct size. Try it on your head. You might need to adjust the guage to compensate for the irregularity of your yarn.
Knit in the round in garter stitch for 7 inches: Knit 1 row.
To decrease for the top of the hat:
Knit 6. Slip 1 stitch. Knit 1. Pass slipped stitch over.
Knit 5. Slip 1 stitch. Knit 1. Pass slipped stitch over.
Knit 4. Slip 1 stitch. Knit 1. Pass slipped stitch over.
Knit 3. Slip 1 stitch. Knit 1. Pass slipped stitch over.
Knit 2. Slip 1 stitch. Knit 1. Pass slipped stitch over.
Knit 1. Slip 1 stitch. Knit 1. Pass slipped stitch over. Break the yarn and pass the yarn through each of the stitches on the needle. Pull the stitches tightly together and secure the ends. To knit a hat with straight sides - and no rolled brim, knit in Garter stitch for a length of 3.5 - 4 inches.
