Turkish Spindles

I think I have finally mastered the technique of spinning with a drop spindle. Well, not mastered exactly, but at least the wool is starting to turn into something that can be called yarn -- instead of loud crashes and much embarrassment and frustration, as the drop spindle - DROPS - and rolls under the furniture. Whether it was this particular spindle or not, it finally worked!

The Turkish spindle is a unique design consisting of a long shaft, with 2 interlocking wooden cross-bars. As the yarn is spun, the spinner can wind the yarn over the crossbars. When the crossbars are slipped out and removed, a ready-to-use centre-pull ball has been created. This eliminates the reeling-off operation. The yarn can easily be plied from the 2 ends of the centre-pull ball.

These particular Turkish spindles designed by Kat Walton, can be ordered in 2 sizes of shafts - long or short. Also you can get 2 weights of cross-bar whorls - light and heavy. The shafts are made of walnut and the whorls are hardwood, in both light and dark coloured woods.

The spindles come packaged with a handy carrier bag - nice idea! The bag could have been a bit wider, though, to accomodate a partially-spun ball of wool. I found that I had to remove the ball from the spindle, in order to pack the project up and take it with me.
