Sarah Lund - White Jumper Motif

If you live in the UK, you may be familiar with the TV series ‘The Killing’ (Forbrydelsen) that has been on for the past several weeks, about a Danish police detective Sarah Lund, played by Sofie Gråbøl. Besides being a very intriguing crime thriller that has me staying home on a Saturday night to watch the next episode, the handknit jumpers that Sarah has been wearing are quite beautiful.

Sarah Lund Interview
In an interview with Sofie Gråbøl by the Guardian, Sofie tells about the decision to wear the jumper. “It tells of a woman who has so much confidence in herself that she doesn’t have to use her sex to get what she wants. She’s herself….
Also I was brought up in the 70s in a very left-wing politically active scene and I wore those sweaters. To me, a sweater like that tells of a person who deep down believes in soft values, togetherness. She works in a cynical world and she is cynical herself, but the sweater says that maybe deep down there’s a longing to, I don’t know, sit around a fire with a guitar!”

Gudrun and Gudrun
If you don’t want to hand knit the sweater yourself, you can order one.

Sirri Faroese Yarn
Where to buy wool for knitting this sweater. You will need about 400 grams of Sirri yarn 3-ply undyed White and Dark Brown, Needle size 8 mm is recommended.
The jumper is knit with quite a loose stitch. But knit the jumper to fit very snugly, because the Sirri wool will stretch when you wear it.

The pullover is knit in a traditional Faroese star knitting design , using a basic raglan sleeve and crew neck sweater design.

I think that this sweater would be quite stunning if knit using natural handspun wool yarns. I may have to purchase some wool roving and spin myself some yarn.

Sarah Lund Brown Sweater

In some episodes, Sarah wore a brown sweater that was similar but with a Diamond pattern rather than the Star.
Here is the Knitting pattern motif for this sweater.

Knitware Design /Software
I find this software easy to use for designing sweaters for handwoven yarns. Knit a test swatch and the software calculates the pattern and yarn requirements.

Hand Spun Yarn

Shetland Handspun yarn
Hand Spun Shetland Knitting Yarn
I find Shetland fleece to be a bit softer and less scratchy than Gotland wool, so I prefer using it for hand knits.
Shop for my hand spun knitting yarns at Folksy. Lovely when knit as a ‘Lund’ style jumper.

Handspun, Handknit Jumpers

If you are looking for something a bit different, how about a Sami-style handknit sweater? These are handknit from handspun pure white merino wool, and decorated with a Sami-style handwoven band – in Sami traditional colors, of course.
